Time To Refill Your Allergy Perscriptions

As we all eagerly await the end to days below fifty degrees other preparations have to be made. Winter coats need to be put away, gardens need to be prepared, some spring cleaning may be in order. For me the most important preparation for spring is to get to a local Brooklyn pharmacy and refill my prescription allergy medicine. I’ve done it since my childhood and it has saved me a lot of pain and anguish.

The arrival of spring is, for most people, incredibly joyous but for some of us with allergies to pollen, dust, and various other things blown into the air as the snow and ice melt away, spring can seem like trouble. Luckily the quality of both prescription and over-the-counter allergy medicine has been steadily improving for a long time now. Used to be we only had Benadryl to keep us from our itchy eyes and stuffed, sneezing, sniffling noses. It made me drowsy and definitely was a downer in general.

Now there are lots of options. Allegra and Zyrtec have definitely gotten the job done for me several times. My preferred allergy suppressant however is prescription strength Claritin. It clears me up fast without any kind of drowsiness.

Nate’s Gives Back

We were very proud to report in our last post to our faithful blog readers that Nate’s Pharmacy participated in an excellent event last weekend. It was a health fair and we are very open to participating in events like this in the future.

It is the kind of community outreach that Nate’s Pharmacy hopes people come to expect and associate with them. NY pharmacy services should have all of the intimacy and care one expects from a local pharmacist. With programs like these and our recent attendance at a forum on prescription abuses around Staten Island, we hope we are proving our commitment to the local issues that affect all of us, in and out of the pharmacy business.

Sara Gadelkarim, Nate’s Pharmacy’s director of marketing, was quoted in the Staten Island Advance last Monday saying, “We want to help low-income people. They struggle to put food on their table, so they can’t always think about making healthy choices and getting tested. We want them to know we’re here for them and we offer services.”

It is touching that a real Staten Island pharmacy is so willing to go out and share its services and expertise with the community, especially to those in need. It’s one of the many things that makes Nate’s more like the local pharmacies you remember as a kid. Pharmacy services should always include a little kindness and a lot of help. With events like this one, these experts on health can share a lot of both.

NY Pharmacy, Not Just Medicine

When I was younger I remember trips to the local Staten Island pharmacy quite vividly. This wasn’t because I was young and obsessed with medication. As a kid the pharmacy isn’t just about being sick and picking up your pills, it’s like a real store. A store with toys and candy. A store with some variation on almost anything you could ask for. As I’ve gotten older I realize I rely on the pharmacy for a lot of my needs.

Just this week Nate’s Pharmacy has a great St. Patrick’s Day themed sale going on. They’ve cleverly called it Saving Green and it offers a chance to highlight the store’s services beyond being a medication compounding pharmacy. The deals are on everything from diapers and Clorox, to over the counter allergy medicine and mouthwash. Just glancing at the deals on their website I can envision myself walking the isles like I did when the pharmacy was the most well stocked store in my neighborhood. They even have a sweet deal on Twizzlers.

Who doesn’t love to shop? It’s kind of nice to know that while you wait for the staff to fill up some pet medications you can browse some magazines or consider making a new soap choice. Helps pass the time!

Swallowing Pills Just Isn’t For Everyone

compounding medicinesI’ve been surprised by how many of my friends have a hard time swallowing pills. A little Googling will show you that it is a pretty common problem. A lot of good pills that have been paid for have been lost to this. Watching someone attempting and failing to swallow a pill repeatedly looks torturous.

People have problems swallowing for a variety of reasons and pretty much every advice site or question and answer site will have a wealth of suggestions. My favorite suggested a person fill a full glass of water and as you drink it to take in the pill, you should stare directly at the bottom of the glass and take the whole thing at once. This sounds like a recipe for hiccups and stomach ache.

Pharmacists Try and Combat Abuses

“It’s very frustrating to receive a prescription where you just don’t know what to do. If you deny a patient on a hunch, you can get sued.”

The above quote is from Nate’s Pharmacy’s own Bernie Glazerman as quoted in the Staten Island Advance this past Thursday. It seems the Advance has recently been on a tear uncovering shady practices allowing addicts and recreational users to get very powerful drugs from the same Staten Island pharmacies as you and I.

These trouble-makers are abusing pharmacy services and as the quote suggests there is real danger for businesses interested in curtailing their illegal consumption. Bernie was out at a recent forum between local law makers and pharmacists to discuss new legislation intended to improve current verification systems.

Pharmacists are committed to improving the current system and it looks like they might be getting some much needed support from the government finally.

Get in Shape Early!

Spring is just around the corner, which means that before you know it, your TV will be flooded with ads for special summer diets and gyms will offer you the annual “Beach Prep” class. But you don’t have to wait for them in order to get in shape!
Start your spring awakening by eating better. Restore the balance to your body by getting all the vitamins you need on a daily basis. We usually tend to forget or neglect our bodies during the winter. But in about a month, as the layers of fleece will give away to our favorite T-shirts, our bodies will suddenly be exposed to much more sunlight (thankfully). Then, the focus will once again turn to making our bodies fit.

Pets Need Pharmacy Services Too!

We often get so caught up in taking care of the medical issues of ourselves and family members, we forget that the furriest members need the same amount of love and care too. Pets need pharmacy services anytime they are affected by an infection or other medical issues. And isn’t it nice to be able to get everything you need for both you and your best friend in one place?

If there ever seems to be an issue with your cat or dog, or any other pet, it’s best to take it to the vet for proper diagnosis. But even in the meantime you can deal with the symptoms and be more comfortable with various over the counter pet medications. Sometimes it’s easy to even treat simple ear mites or fleas on your own without having to make the vet trip.

Of course, if there seems there’s a deeper problem make sure to take that extra trip. Leaving certain conditions untreated can lead to further complications and bigger medical bills later on. After all, you want your pet to live a long and healthy life! But when you get that prescription for them, it’s good to know your local pharmacy will have what they need.

Compounding Medicines 101

For those who may be unaware, when pharmacists have the responsibility of assembling combination drugs is it an aspect of pharmaceuticals called “compounding pharmacy.” As a means of ensuring safe health, the pharmacist is charged with the accountability for combining several raw ingredients in the correct, healthy doses. After all, one pill does not fit every individual perfectly. Compounding pharmacies are ideal for patients who require medications that need certain doses. It’s also an ideal way of preventing yourself from having to take multiple pills.

Perhaps the biggest benefits of a compounding pharmacy is also the most basic; by cutting down on the number of pills you take, not only are you easing the physical burden, you’re also ensuring the correct doses. After all, simpler is smarter.

However some people will say that the biggest benefit is that getting compounding medicines protects you from artificial add-ons. For example, non-compounding medicines typically have artificial preservatives, colorants, flavorants, etc. added to them for a series of different reasons. By opting for compounding medicines from your compounding pharmacy, not only will you be cutting down on the literal number of pills you’ll be swallowing, you’ll also be cutting down on the artificial ingredients.

The Benefits Of The Things You Don’t Know You Eat

I was recently at a Vietnamese restaurant, where I had a delicious vegetarian dish that had lemongrass amongst its long list of ingredients. For those who are unaware, lemongrass is a commonly used flavoring agent in Vietnamese cuisine, as well as Thai and Cambodian dishes. It also contains quality doses of an essential oil called “citral,” which is a fantastic natural remedy for muscle cramps, spasms, and digestive issues.

Here are some other ingredients you’ll find in different common food sources that have added health benefits (like compounding medicines) that  you may not be aware of:

Marjoram
